Is there a style gene? Is style a choice or are some people just born that way? Someone asked me the other day when I had become interested in style. I had to laugh. In my case, my awareness of style goes so far back that I believe I was just born that way. I have always been intrigued about why and how style trends are formed. Why do two people interpret the same trend differently? How do fashionable people put their look together? Who and what are the influencers? I remember wondering why avocado green was popular in the 60’s (don’t we all?) I think I have paid attention to details about the world around me as far back as I can remember. When neighbors pulled their new creme 1959 Cadillac into their driveway, I thought I would faint. Always curious, I have spent a lifetime doing, creating, curating, and reading about the wonderful, constantly changing world of style.
Born that way? According to Diana Vreeland I was. Seems far fetched, I know. However, the little red dress that my mom bought for me to wear my second Christmas is proof enough for me. It was red, had ruffles and white lace. She never got it on me. No way was I going to wear that dress. And the funny thing is-I still don’t wear red or ruffles. Was I really bucking the trend of the day by refusing to wear that dress back in 1955? Was it more about control? We’ll never know.
But I do know this- I was just born this way.
